A Weekend of Firsts

It’s the first weekend of the chilly month of December which means it will be filled with many “first” events throughout Portland. Whether you’re interested in something artsy, a night of dancing, or interested in relaxing to a good film, you’re set. With so many different things to choose from, you’re bound to find some fun that’s right up your alley.

12/6: Dirtbag! @ The Know, 10 PM – 2 AM
DIRT BAG is a free queer, indie dance pop, electro, house, remix jams party sesh that happens every first Thursday at The Know. The special guest for this month is FREDDIE SAYS RELAX. Freddie plays all your favorites so you’re bound to have a good night of dancing. Yr grrrl and Bruce LaBruiser will be there as well to keep the night going strong.

12/7 – pARTy in the name of Art @ YU Contemporary, 8 – 10:45 PM

pARTyRACC’s pARTy in the name of Art is a fundraiser for The Right Brain Initiative and Work for Art. The night will also be honoring one of the city’s great arts advocates, Mayor Sam Adams. Patron tickets are $175, including a cocktail reception at 6:30PM and special cabaret performance at 8PM at YU Contemporary, followed by complimentary dessert. Some of Portland’s most renowned dancers, singers, actors and artists are feverishly preparing for this night. Dance party tickets are $25. At 9:00 pm the doors will be open on the main level for several hundred others to join the celebration. Both floors of YU will be open for unique entertainment and interactive art experiences as you dance the night away. At midnight, breakfast will be served on the upper floor as the party winds down.

12/7 – Queer-ee-oke @ Local Lounge, 9 PM – 2 AM
Every first Friday of the month you can guarantee a good time singing along to your classic favorites. No need to sound like Cher, just get those vocal chords warmed up and come out for a good time.

12/7 – Jackie Beat’s Holiday Show @ Eagle Portland, 9 – 11:45 PM

Jackie Beat, everyone’s favorite Grinch is returning to Portland to perform her holiday show, JACKIE BEAT: COME, THEY TOLD ME. Jackie is an award-winning drag darling and has been wowing audiences since 1989. She’s only here for one night so don’t miss it! Stay after the show to meet and greet Jackie Beat herself! Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. For advance tickets see bartenders at Eagle Portland. Advance purchase highly recommended; Beat has sold out every holiday show in the last 11 years.

12/7 – Edie Fake Binary Lore Exhibition @ PNCA Feldman Gallery, 1 – 3 PM
Chicago artist Edie Fake is visiting PNCA’s Feldman Gallery for the exhibition Binary Lore and will be giving a talk at 1 PM. Fake just finished the FINGERS gay performance tour. He received a Printed Matter award, and his “Gaylord Phoenix” book comes out this year on Secret Acres.
These works, colorfully and meticulously are crafted in pen, ink, and gouache. Fake combines the historical and fictitious into a poetic image, the content of which is lodged in the viewer.

12/7 – 12/9: Bear City 2 Portland Premiere @ The Clinton Street Theater

BearCity2 This weekend marks the special screening of the Portland premiere of Bear City 2. The director will be in attendance at every showing and will be available for a Q & A session after the showing. There will be a special menu of food from Dot’s Cafe each night after the showings. BearCity is a hirsute “Sex and the City,” following the funny, romantic, and occasionally dramatic adventures of a group of bears and cubs in New York City. The sequel, BearCity 2 follows our familiar characters and a few new ones as they head to Provincetown, MA for Bear Week. Buy your tickets in advance through Brown Paper Tickets. Use the drop down list under “Date” to select the day/time of your choosing. Admission fee: $8 in advance through Brown Paper Tickets. $10 at the door.
