Weekend Happenings

Well, things are cooling down here at the Jupiter. We don’t mind all that much, because we’re hot enough as it is. It was getting a little out of hand with those sweltering temps when we’re plenty good at heating things up for ourselves, ya dig? Speaking of which, there are a handful of hot happenings this weekend to get your thermostats rising.

Happening this week:

  • Q Doc returns tonight at the McMenamin’s Kennedy School from 7:00-11:30PM. Screening only LGBT-themed documentaries, the Portland Queer Documentary Film Festival is the only of its kind in the world. Sponsored in part by the PDX Q Center, festival co-directors David Weissman and Russ Gage, along with Host Chris Israel, will present Wish Me Away as the opening film, to be followed by a celebratory opening night party. The film provides an intimate look at Chely Wright, the first openly gay country music star. Tickets are available (and recommended) in advance for all shows.
  • Basic Rights Oregon will make its own appearance for Q Doc at the Kennedy School from 6:00-8:00PM this Saturday May, 19th. Both directors Joe Fox and James Nubile will be in attendance with subject Darlene Huntress for the showing of Question One. The film, which chronicles the battle for gay marriage in Maine and mirrors the West Coast struggle for equality, will be followed by a panel discussion regarding same-sex marriage.
  • Next Wednesday May 23rd, the InQuisitive program will host Queertet for an interactive Q & A panel with Executive Director Barbara McCullough-Jones. With an aim for diversity in content, this month’s guest is a local string quartet whose goal is bring classical non-classical, and chamber music to those who would otherwise not have access. Doors to the Q Center open at 11:45AM, so bring your lunch and a $5 donation to benefit SMYRC & Esther’s Pantry.
